Three cylinders can be as simple as a bad ignition lead costing a few pounds , or it may be stuck valves , or oil fouling of the plug from worn rings . Then again it could be caused by a faulty distributor or distributor cap .
There are just too many causes to be certain of anything , a compression test will reveal a lot if you can persuade the owner to let you check . Otherwise pull out the plug at the missing cylinder and see if it is badly oil fouled , black is ok , this is just poorly combusted fuel , oily and tarry is worse and points to worn or cracked rings .
As Michael says pictures will help .
