Finding a chassis number

Post by Philipo » Thu Nov 29, 2012 12:36 pm

Hi, I have purchased a Ferguson TEF 20, the chassis plate which is usually in front of the steering wheel on the so called dash board has been removed, does anyone know if the chassis number would be stamped anywhere else on the tractor. I need to register it with dvla. No number plate, no log book, no chassis number so far. I have a date of manufacture which is 15/12/52 also engine number, and british patent number. would be grateful for any help. Many thanks.

Unless you have some form of paper work with the relevant numbers on you don't stand much chance of getting the serial number without the steering column plate. To registrate it with DVLA you'll have to get a letter of authentication from a club, Friends of Ferguson Heritage is one. I'm not sure about what you need to do if you don't have serial number, it's come up on here before though.

The seventh of July nineteen fifty five is the closest date you will probably glean from those numbers . The tractor would have left the Banner Lane production line a few weeks later .

No unfortunately , I am also in the same position .
The plates were made of very poor quality alloy and thin at that . They seemed to corrode very badly , especially anywhere near salt air .
Previous owners and paperwork are probably your only chance of discovering it now .

I had this problem with a missing serial plate. When I phoned dvla I could tell them the original Reg and from the engine serial number and casting on the transmission had a good stab at the start of the serial number. Knowing it would be TED and from a rough guess would be 273———

The chap very kindly let me guess the last 3 digits as I could tell him the previous owners address being that it was my grandad.

I got very lucky, however if you can make an educated guess at the serial and have the original registration it may be worth a call to dvla
